Please join us for a moderated discussion with the daughters of civil rights activists Senator Verda Welcome and Evelyn T. Butts, who broke down barriers while fighting tirelessly for social justice. Maryland Senator Verda Welcome was the first Black woman in the nation elected to a state legislature and Virginia activist Evelyn T. Butts was the plaintiff in a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case that abolished the poll tax. Daughters Mary Sue Welcome, Esq., and Charlene Butts Ligon, author of Fearless: How a poor Virginia seamstress took on Jim Crow, beat the poll tax and changed her city forever, will share the untold stories of their mothers. Their battles for anti-discrimination, equality, and justice changed history and a nation. Listen in as we learn more from the two daughters, whose own lives and careers continue the legacy of Senator Welcome and Mrs. Butts. |
